A raytracer is a raytracer. (Well, okay that's true and not true) The BASE math and science of raytracing is a constant, and Bryce IS a raytracer, SO, on some level it IS as powerful as the "big boys". (Although, a lot of the big boys render with scanline) Yet, speed algorhythym advances in raytracers and speeds in cpu's have advanced a lot in the past 5 years, so you see more instances of raytracing by higher end programs. Anyway, as we know, Bryce has been in need of some updating to its renderer in speed, and in the program with what options it can do as far as more realistic lighting (which is the cornerstone of any render) You'll see cool progress in Bryce 5.5 and 6.0, not to worry.
