I've used Tatoo a little bit. It's a fun app, but I don't think you can do much detail with it. On my system it has not been consistent. Kinda buggy. If you don't need a lotta detail you might like it.
Amorphium is a 'different', but elegant, modeling app that can do painting, again, not so hot on detail, though. Dunno about import/export issues. I tried the Amorphium demo last night for the first time and it looks like a really neat app. It has a very good "Amorphium Tour" (chapter 3) in the manual that comes with the download. After spending a couple hours on that 38 page chapter I felt like I knew ALL the tools in the app reasonably well. And it has a big toolset. The fastest learning curve I've ever seen in any 3d app, but, being able to use those tools skillfully is another story...I cannot. hehe. Maybe with time and practice. I think I'm gonna buy the registered version of Amorphium ($140?) just because it was such a pleasant experience sitting down and feeling like I understood and could use the entire toolset reasonably well in such a short time. Their 'sculpting algorithm' is just a lotta fun to me. Err. You asked about painting. Sorry. Yea. You can paint your models in it :)
