This was not an overnight decision. Barbara (DreamWarrior) and I thought this out, while taking everyone's opinions into account.
Hopefully I can clarify this a bit:

When you bring in other elements, the 'focus' tends to go away from the 'fractal' part of the image, and this IS a 'Fractal' gallery. (Check this post on 'Focal Point')

"They are meant to share with the world what imo beautiful things can be done with fractals. They represent the other side of fractal creations spectrum imo."

Exactly...we completely understand, and that is another good reason for the move. As stated in the new guidelines, we feel that as the 'Mixed Medium' gallery grows with fractal compositions, it will also draw more interest in fractals.
