You can use the clipping bracket to cut off the edges of a terrain. See the attached image. Click on the little icons up top of the terrain editor, and you'll get the clipping bracket, and be able to change the terrain to Solid. Click where the arrow shows, not out on the thin lines. drag up until the red swallows up the area that you don't want.
