Another thing you could try is to make your top terrain positive, then create another terrain (or duplicate the first one) and mess with the shape a bit - flatten it down on the Y axis, stretch it etc., and place a different material on it. Then make it negative, move it up to cover part of the top terrain, and group them. You make objects positive or negative by selecting the object, then clicking on the A beside the object to open the Attributes tab.
