There's a certain amount of cross-over between armies, too. Up until roughly 1941, the US Army was using a similat helmet to the British Army, and quite a few US-made weapons were used by the Home Guard, as well as the general use of the Thompson. And the classic example is the metal Jerrycan, copied from the Germans and still a NATO standard. Though there are detail differences.
