Subject: ERROR: target geometry has wrong number of vertices?

Hello, Sorry for such a simple question. I'm try to add a morph target to an obj. I export the part of concern from Poser 4, then import it into Carrera. I modify the part (I'm just stretching a portion of it in one direction), then export it as an obj. When I try to load it into Poser as a morph target for the orginal item, Poser gives me the error message "target geometry has wrong number of vertices". I've looked thru the model in Carrera and don't see anything else in the field. Can anyone help? Thanks Mark

It means somewhere in the translation from Carrara and back the number of vertices was changed. You can only use a morph target that has exactly the same number of vertices as the original. - Noel

You might get a better idea of what's going on by looking at both obj files with a text editor. Hopefully they are not very large files. Both files SHOULD have the same number of v statements and the numbers following the v should mostly be the same in both cases. The only numbers to change will be the ones representing the direction in which you have done the scaling. This won't give you a solution, but it will at least tell you whether there's a minor error or whether maybe the file has become completely corrupted.

I get the same thing, from time to time, with Carrara (v1.1). Export an obj from Poser, manipulate it in Carrara, save it properly (you are clicking the 'use Carrara co-ordinates' option, yes?), then try to load it as a MT. Error message as stated. Go back into Carrara and load the very same obj you originally saved, try again, but this time it works. I don't know the precise reason it does it, but I do know the 'workaround'. If you make a morph where vertices cross over each other, or polygons intersect (easy to do if you're using a deformer), then I think Carrara changes the vertex order when saving the obj. As far as Poser is concerned, although there are the same number of vertices, it thinks it's a different model. So no morph. The 'workaround' is to make a less extreme morph, but make it carefully, so that when you dial past 1.0 in Poser, the morph takes you to your intended look without the mesh looking yucky. The other thing that could be causing the problem is if you are actually working on a multi-part obj. If you do your stuff in Carrara but then simply select one part to export, you'll lose the first row of vertices where it joins the next part of the obj. Once you've done your work in Carrara, select one body part at a time, Select > detach polygons > invert selection > delete > then export your body part. Repeat for every other part. If this doesn't help, it'll probably speed up the process of finding out what's wrong if you post your steps here, and maybe a 'before' and 'after' picture (obj in Carrara pre-modelling and post-). A few rules have to be observed in the exchange process .

When exporting from Poser, ensure that only a single complete object is selected, weld is turned off and that the morf option is checked .
When importing into the modeller, ensure that axes are not switched, original dimensions are preserved, and that object is imported as a single object .
In the modeller, modify only with transform and magnet tools .
When exporting from the modeller, ensure again that axes are not switched, original dimensions are preserved and in addition, local axes are used .

It is helpful to test unmodified first before proceeding with the resculpting; otherwise the efforts might be wasted .
That should cover it .

I use Rhinocerus from time to time to make morphs. We have the same problem there also.

The most important thing you have to do is this. While exporting out of poser, make sure that you put a check in the box for "As Morph Target (No World Transformations)" in the saving options box. If you don't do this, it will not work. Make sure weld is not checked also.
