Back in 1982, I was artist-in-residence for a week at an elementary school (a special program). One of the 4th graders asked "How do you keep from making mistakes?" Somehow he'd been given the idea that adults were perfect. I pulled out 5 different sorts of erasers from my toolbox and held them up. "Adults make mistakes... we just try to fix them before others see them." And sometimes mistakes lead to delightful accidents: I know one watercolor artist who starts by spilling stuff haphazardly and then 20 minutes later has a wonderful nature piece with rocks, branches and small wild things peeking out as she prods, sweeps, and blows on the mess. When she dampens the paper, she has no idea what is going to happen or if it will be worth saving, but she goes ahead anyway. We wouldn't be chatting if you hadn't posted....
