A great new movie has just been released that has a really interesting production theme- using 3D Special effects and blue screen effects but in a retro- alternative history- 1930's sci-fi world...

It also seems like it borrows from Microsoft's "Crimson Skies" game- if you are familiar with that. "Crimson Skies" has always been one of my favorite PC games and I've been about ready to get an X-Box to play the X-Box version.

Hope this movie spins-off some Poser gear! I see that BVH just released a very sexy Retro Airline Stewardess outfit that fits this theme (so I snapped it up).

There's also a downloadable free game on the movie website, but I haven't played it yet. Hope this movie does well as it looks like they did some very COOL production work on getting it to look right.

I love Angelina Jolie. She's quickly becoming one of my favorite actresses. They filmed this movie completely in a blue room/box in London, with little to no props. So the actors had to imagine everything. Jolie is also in an Oliver Stone movie called Alexander (the great) which I just saw my first glimpses of earlier tonight. I guess she had time while they were adding in all the cgi to go and film another movie.

Saw it last night, it's the most stylish movie I have seen in a while, captures the feel of those old science fiction and adventure flicks perfectly. Every frame has been postworked for lighting effects etc... while not in black and white the movie is sepia toned for that old look, the whole thing is very well done.

It's a fabulous concept, and the visuals are truly stunning. But as with Final Fantasy, the story runs out of steam about half way through, and the last half of this thing is borderline boring. Pity, too, because the idea behind it is marvelous, and the design is amazing.

Just got back from seeing Sky Captain and the only way to describe the film is STUNNING. The visuals were amazing. The CGI is so well blended with live action it's seamless. They captured the flavor of film in the 40's and blended it with modern cinematography in a way that is captivating.

The story is well thought out, the characters sympathetic and believable with a touch of larger than life. The action keeps you right on the edge of your seat. The story doesn't run out of steam at all...it teases you with mystery and unravels the plot at a steady pace. Borderline boring? No way, the only way you'd fall asleep during this film is if you have narcolepsy!

Angelina Jolie has already declared her availability for a sequal...let's hope there is one.

Here's BVH's latest, at the usual amazingly low price of $5!

This outfit is in the style of the movie, and also works really well for other Retro scenes, including even as a 1950's era Carhop at a stylish Drive-In-- just give her roller skates!

I think some of the DAZ PC club items like the Spaceship Mongo might also fit nicely into this retro movie theme...

I have wanted to see this movie since I first saw the commercials. The overly saturated looking imagery that screams 40's and "War of the Worlds" to me. I didn't even are about the story line I just want to see the pretty images lol

I must be missing something... Though the Baron's stuff is only just out. Anyway, what is this "toxic"? Some pop video? Unless they're really playing fast an loose with the costume design, it doesn't seem to fit the film all that well.

sorry about that,
I was just excited to see the outfit, that is a singer wearing that outfit in a video, nothing to do with the movie at all, didn't mean to take the thread off topic or anything. I removed the image so as not to confuse the topic, carry on :0)

I think we all live in somewhat dis-connected worlds, depending upon our ages and local cultures maybe- I have never seen the Britney - Toxic video, but the outfit looks very RETRO to me- like a 1930's Space Sci-Fi thing... But then, everything gets RE-CYCLED every 10-15 years and later generations think a certain look is "50's", or "80's, or whatever (or whenever you entered the Culture-Stream).

I found this outfit over at RDNA for S3- and for me it is very much in the "Crimson Skies" game style, which is itself a 1930's Alternative History fighter pilot shoot down game. I guess you have to be old enough to have seen some of the original 30's type movies (at least on Black and White TV- as I did as a kid) to see how the modern movies, games and fashions play off these earlier styles...

Link to the new X-Box version

Crimson Skies Synopsis:

"The year is 1937. The United States has shattered under the combined weight of the Great Depression, regional Prohibition and mounting isolationism. The transcontinental railroad and the budding highway system have become useless as they now cross hostile borders. Commerce and trade leave the ground as air travel now becomes a vital lifeline connecting allied countries -- and a national obsession -- while daring air pirates and valiant air militias battle for control of the skies. Giant zeppelins crisscross the skies, carrying both passengers and cargo. It is a time of gunship diplomacy and airship piracy. It is the age of the fighter pilot and a time of daredevil adventure and sinister intrigue. It is the world of Crimson Skies "

BTW The3dZone, your post didn't bother ME. Don't mind knowing that BVH's set was inspired by a Britney video... (I spend most of my TV time, which isn't a lot, watching the History Channel, but I haven't watched MTV for a few years).

Pwiecek over at the DAZ forum told me I should check out Bat's Vintage Army set. It looks like an old Soviet Army uniform, but HEY, I guess that IS RETRO 30's also!

I bet SOMEONE will be making something closer to what Angelina Jolie is wearing in Sky Captain because it will be too hard to resist, heh. In the meantime- these others are worth checking out...

Gareee ( ) posted Sun, 19 September 2004 at 9:26 AM

We really liked Sky Captain, but I wonder how well it'll do at the box office.. the action is kinda slow paced, and I don't know how today's generation will embrace the 40's look and feel. That said, I'd love a "Mysterious Woman" set, and those robots were VERY cool. BTW don;t even BOTHER with the freebie game download.. it really sucks badly. The Sky Captain website also has a massive pic download bundle, for fan web creation with lots of pics...

Way too many people take way too many things way too seriously.

I couldn't find the download bundle under the download links- I guess you have to register and go further into the website. I DID find a download bundle like that on the Crimson Skies website however.

I think that as far as the "current generation" not finding it as interesting as the usual plethoria of Hollywood garbage, doesn't bother me. Adults need some decent and stylistically clever movies to see. And where "Sky Captain" will succeed is in the initial cable pay-for-view and especially the DVD aftermarket. People forget that the older folks have a LOT MORE money than the little mall rats,
and while they don't rush out to see latest hyped 3D epic, they WILL buy the DVD's later for home viewing, the extra goodies, out takes, director interviews, etc. ---AND, because this movie probably had relatively low production costs, it will probably make money...

Plus, while the free game is no good (I haven't tried it honestly), I bet someone like Microsoft could turn it into a desktop PC or X-Box hit, and it will make LOTS of money there as well for the older folks who are looking for clever, stylistic games.

The debut flight of Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow landed the No. 1 weekend box office spot with an estimated $16.2 million amid an overall lackluster turnout at theaters.

The $70 million, film-noir-styled fantasy starring Jude Law, Gwyneth Paltrow and Angelina Jolie cast its live actors against digitally animated giant robots on a backdrop of 1930s New York.

I enjoyed "Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow"; not the best movie in the world, but visually appealing and a nice diversion. It (and this thread, admittedly) inspired me to create a texture set for my DART model that makes it stylistically similar to the retrofuturistic look of the movie. I might just have to get BVH's stewardess outfit to go with it :-)
