Set the hairs' Root Width to 2.5, and play around with the Length Variance dial so they don't look so uniform. For something as short and stiff as grass blades, you can also reduce the Verts Per Hair to 8 or so, which will improve performance. In the pic of the ground plane above, I'd set the Number of Hairs to 2000.
