It's sad to admit many of us can't afford or don't want to spend the money to give away free stuff. Yes, the web site hosts are in it for the money. One host told me he made more profit from folks who just put up a personal site as a hobby, and had very little traffic. I'm willing to bet many artists finally abandoned freebies, and "went commercial" partially because of the high cost of giving away freebies.
