My photography teacher (from way back when) called this an Editorial Inquisitive Composition. Whereby, the image is attempting to lead the viewer towards a conclusion by enticing them to ask questions and hopefully tell a story by doing so. She went on to say that the photographer should never require the viewer to ask more than 3 questions. Otherwise, it becomes an exercise in frustration. "Who is waiting in the shadows?" There's someone waiting in the shadows. I can't see anything there and my monitor's Gamma is maxed-out. I'm getting scared...
