If I were to unattach the eyelashes for a poser figure and move them into the head to hide them totally using a program like LW8, could I load that modified head as a functional morph target?

In a word, no.

A morph target must have the same number of vertices as the original object.

If you "unattach" the eyelashes, you would change the number of vertices and therefore the resulting mesh could not be used as a morph target.

What you might consider doing is ... make the eyelashes totally transparent with no transmap applied which will effectively hide them if that is what you are trying to accomplish.

Nicely done ENGELKEN, and very nicely pictured, also.

Guess I was "focused" on the possibility of altering the number of vertices (i.e., "unattach") which would rule out using a morph target.

You need to start writin' tuts ....... so I can quit. ;=]

Engelken I think I goofed. Something went wrong as you can see. I don't think I applied step three correctly. As you can probably see the magnet distorted my entire head. Please explain step three more thoroughly. How do I group the mag to the lashes to get the results in the tutorial.

There can be a problem with ENGELKEN's method in Poser 4 (I don't know about other versions). Creating the group also causes Poser to write the geometry for the head to the figure as a geomCuston (internal geometry). If you then load a second instance of the same figure its head will be missing.

Should you need to, you can avoid this problem by performing the following extra steps. Proceed through step #5 in post #3, then:

  1. set the morph target to 1.000, set all other morphs in the head to zero.

  2. Export the head as an obj file, only have a tick in the "As Morph Target" in the export options.

  3. Delete the figure, then load a new instance of the figure.

  4. Select the head, then from the Object menu select "Load Morph Target", load the morph you saved, and set its dial to 1.000.

If you want you can now save the character back to a pallet, I sugest that you use a diffrent name so as not to overwrite the original.

P.S. Geep's method of setting the eyelashes to transparent is probable the easiest, if you do this I would also recomend that you set the Object and Highlight Color to black, the Highlight Size to 1, and the Texture Map to None (these are Poser 4 settings, some of the names may be diffrent in P5).

My bad. Was just thinking of the "one off" situation. Here's the rest of the instructs for saving morph for later use. I also loaded it with the full range of morph injects for head and this morph at 1.000 does not affect the other eye/lid morphs. They still work fine.

Thank you for the tutorials, they helped alot. The figure is coming along great. This is the figure with a displacement map applied, the custom eyelashes I modeled are being attached right now. When I finifsh the transmap for the custom lashes, I will share that as well.
