Just scanned this for reference regarding the eyes and mouth. It's a close up taken from "peekaboo fuzzies" whcih decorated the endpapers of the childrens version of the stories (according to the text given in The Art Of Michael Whelan). (man, look at the reflections in those eyes!!! He painted this in acrylics) The small cat like ears are rather forward on the head, and the face is fairly flat -- so the eye ridge comes pretty close to the ears. The more I look the farther away this sucker gets - I'm just not that good at this stuff yet, lol. Also, note that these images are all 20 years old -- Whelan did the covers for the re release of the stories in the early and mid 80's. Also, note that at the time in the 60's, the concept of trademark likeness was a hot button issue since it was a huge to do in the courts at the time over the whole superman thing (still one of the ulgiest IP fights ever) -- and ST had been hit with suits already over the terms "phasers", "warp drive" and sundry. Given it was a show that was doing so so in the ratings at the time, they didn't want to anger the network execs with legal crap. As for HBP's Little Fuzzies -- They are not something I would make for recompense in any case, and as there's no record of likeness on file, I feel fairly comfortable. If someone comes across one, let me know, though -- wouldn't want to break the trademark on them. Just be sure it's a trademark -- copyright doesn't cover likeness...

of us, one non-flunkey, one hero, if we like: that will be two
heroes to begin with. (Carlyle)
