One thing about Piper's critters; it was other writers who suggested they might be descended from survivors of a starship crash, because of their dependence on a vary rare trace element. So it isn't quite canon to equip them with starships, but I always thought it was a plausible scenario. Piper's own sequel followed a different thread, but the stories are compatible.
