I've heard incredible things about Modo. And, AgentS, in last months one just had to consider SoftImage XSI Foundation sold at 495$ plus training. I dloaded the trial version (30 days full functional), and it's really awesome. Offers almost everything you can think to need when modeling or rendering or animating. S.
