Your computer is a pretty complex device. Basically, one rule of thumb has never failed me:

Always keep your software and hardware up-to-date. That includes the latest version of your drivers, latest version of Internet Explorer, etc. You wouldn't think Internet Explorer would have anything to do with Poser, but it does. For some reason many programs have a hook into Internet Explorer.

I've had a SoundBlaster Live for a few years. I just use the drivers that Windows XP installs. I never do anything fancy with the card, and I don't have any problems.
It was a good idea to get the more powerful power supply and the extra fans. Too many of us neglect that stuff, and regret it later. Poser taxes your CPU to the max, and you need to keep it cool.
