You can download a free utility called "Correct Reference" at the link. (There is a paid-for version - CRPro - with more features, but the freebie is a good starting place.) Usually when you download a freebie the artist will have zipped the file to keep the paths intact. If you open it in Winzip you should see that the paths are there, probably starting with "Runtime/Libraries/hair" etc. Sometimes freebie providers put all their items in an enclosing "MyFreebie" folder. Then you have to take out the contents and manually place them in your Poser directories. Also many older freebies weren't zipped like this and you have to place the items yourself.
