Just a quick note: when you invert the selection, it increases the mask's size by one pixel, leaving a ring around the figure. To eliminate this, start with your base layer file. Go to select, and select your alpha channel. This will automatically select the figure. With the selection still active, copy, then paste -- this creates a new layer with just the figure -- and no ring of extra pixels. Return to the base layer and delete to white.
