This is a post that shows how to create a light dome quickly using Wings. Now you don't HAVE to use Wings it is just a quick way to create one but...the lightdome will give you better overall lighting for your scene in this case bringing out the colors on the back of your characters without making them too bright. A lightdome is basically a shpere or half sphere made up of multiple spherical lights all set to low level. You can then expand the sphere around your scene and light it more evenly. I only recently started using this approach and I am usually very pleased with the results. Hope that helps a bit. :)
