They are LOTS better than a mouse if you 'Draw' Because they are pressure sensitive you have a lot more control over what your doing.. With a mouse you select your brush size and no matter how light or hard you push down with your mouse your line will remain the same.. With a graphics tablet you select your brush size and can go from a wisp of a line to a tree trunk.. Total control. I don't have Max but use mine (Wacom) with Bryce. I use my stylus/pen as I would a mouse.. I haven't had any problems with it... All I can say is that having used a graphics tablet I wouldn't go back to just a mouse.
