Subject: DAZStudio file map needed

bost ( ) posted Fri, 03 December 2004 at 7:20 PM · edited Wed, 27 November 2024 at 8:43 AM

I've loaded DAZStudio and its found all my errant Poser files on both my drives, then I go to import one of my previous P4 figures and DAZ tells me it can't find a part of the figure (usually a tex, sometimes a geometry) and that I should clean up my Poser file directory.
Sounds do-able (like the Augean Stables), except I don't know how to lay the thing out so that I can access them in DAZStudio the same way I do the mini-Mikes and dragons that came with it.
So here's the questions:
Can someone give me the file layout for DAZStudio so that I can put all the figures I have into the right files so that I don't have to dance all over the place to import one into my scene? What are the files called and what kind of files does it hold?
Why do I have to re-load DAZStudio every time I want it to search for new content? Can't they set it up so it does this search thing on command?
Any advice is appreciated.

Go to Edit>Preferences and click on the "Directories" tab. There's one option in the pull down box for DAZ|Studio content and one for Poser content. The program will search for Poser directories by looking for a poser.exe file (D|S contains a null file with this name). If you have D|S content in other directories, you'll have to use the "Add" option to navigate to them. D|S saves Scene files (.daz) which contain filepaths to all content in a scene (rather than saving the actual content to a file) or Pose, Material, Camera or Light Preset files (.dsb). You can organize these in your D|S content folder(s) in anyway that makes sense to you.

Thanks. "If you have D|S content in other directories, you'll have to use the "Add" option to navigate to them." This poses a big problem because, in order to keep my disks lean, I usually post the content on my stand-alone hard drive. All my Poser and D/S content is on this drive, only the application is on my main drive. I don't suppose "Add" can do multiples?

You might be able to add the removable drive, you could try it and see if it works.

If I have the removable drive plugged in when I load D/S then it picks everything up. What I was thinking of doing was copying everything on it directly into the appropriate D/S file folders on the main disk then loading D/S again.

It would probably be easier that way.

You should be able to have as many "Poser" folders as you want under D|S - you'll get a separate entry for each in the Content palette. I have half-a-dozen or so, mostly on my second HD, with D|S itself on my main drive. It may be that D|S scraps the unavailable folders if you start with the removable drive disconnected, or that it is failing to keep track of the removable drive at all for some reason, but it certainly sounds as if you've found a bug of some sort.
