It's a Norfolk Pine. Commonly used as a houseplant in offices and such, when potted. Outside, it can grow to be 200 feet tall.

It's a popular Christmas tree in Hawai`i because it's a tropical plant. Other pine trees won't grow in the tropics. It will grow a foot or more a year, so my dad planted four trees in the backyard. Each year, he cuts one down to use as a Christmas tree. By the time he's cycled through them, the first one is tall enough to be a Christmas tree again.

They are pretty trees, with a lot of space for ornaments. They don't have that "piney" smell, though.

The species is originally from Norfolk Island in Australia. Supposedly, Captain Cook brought it to Hawai`i, hoping to make ship masts out of them. They turned out to be unsuitable for that purpose, though.
