Definitely try before you buy. It's a quirky thing. The software one person loves may drive another person up the wall. You don't want to spend $3,000 on a program, only to find that you hate it.

There are several very good free modelling programs. (See link.) Wings is probably the most popular. But I hate the Wings interface. I can't do anything in it. I've tried many programs, and so far, Anim8or (also free) is my favorite. I found it very intuitive. A few hours after downloading it, I'd made my first model. But I came into 3D through CADD, so my idea of intuitive probably isn't the same as most. :-)
