For personal development, the priorities may be different, but from an artistic standpoint, the means are irrelevant, the results everything. From a career standpoint, the best strategy is to save up for a high-end app like 3D max (i.e., the best tool), and in the meantime, mastering the intricacies of Poser 5 is excellent training.
