Something that works well in post work in Photoshop or another such program, is to dupicate the image and erase the eyes, later adding a subtle drop shadow to that top layer. Just adjust the angle of the drop shadow to match your lights and shadows. The drop shadow gets rid of the 3d eyeball highlights that people don't have. Just some ideas.
