Subject: Grouping Polygons

Hello Group, Happy Holidays. In Poser, is it possible to assign portions of an imported model (.OBJ format)into groups of polygons? For example I have a fish model created in Carrara and I want to import it into Poser and make it's tail poseable. Can I use the Grouping Tool in Poser to accomplish this? Any advice is appreciated. Thank you, Ben

If you have propack or poser 5 you can use the grouping tool to make your fish work. If you only have poser 4 you can import your figure with a phi file, phi files work with propack and poser 5 too but I prefer not using a phi file as you have more control using the setup room. Dr geep has some tutorials about making figures, I don`t know if he has made a phi file tutorial (yet).

Ben, if it's just a fish movement, judicious application of the wave deformer (or even a magnet zone) will morph it in a realistic manner, without the need for any groups. I.e. fish don't swim by flapping their tails back and forth. Instead, they move with a sinusoidal bending of the entire body.

You don't need PHI files in P4. Group the parts. 'Spawn Props' Set the hierarchy. 'Create new figure' The hierarchy editor in P4 lets you drag/drop parts-to-parts and rot orders, so there is really no point in ever making a PHI file IMO.

Thanks Looniper! After a quick try it seems this method works. The only thing that I noticed was that the original "whole" Vertex model stays behind after spawning props. I was able to delete the "whole" model in the Hierarchy Editor and the grouped parts stayed behind. Regards, Ben
