it is possible to make characters from scratch. There are a lot of programs out there (Wings 3d, sorry..union rules and all), Lightwave, Maya, 3ds Max, etc., that you can make a character in. Once that's done, you do the boning, skinning, cleaning, and touchups, and other stuff, and you can copyright *that*, as long as it's an original work.
