Subject: Are Freak and M3 somehow related ?

Are Freak and M3 somehow related ? I must admit I don't know anything about these characters but just by looking around I found many items who fit both characters.

RawArt ( ) posted Fri, 07 January 2005 at 8:00 AM

They are both Unimesh figures, so I guess they are brothers :)

pdxjims ( ) posted Fri, 07 January 2005 at 8:05 AM

M3 and the Freak are both Unimesh figures grouped in the M3 manner. They take the same textures, they don't take the same clothing. Morphs for one can be transfered to the other using Morphmanager. V3, SP3, She-Freak, and David are also Unimesh figures but are grouped in the V3 manner. V3 morphs will not work on M3 or the Freak, and vice versa. All Unimesh figures can take the same textures, although there are very slight differences between the UV mapping between male and female figures.

What does "Unimesh" mean ? Sounds like a company name. Can you explain the "grouping" in detail ?

Philodox ( ) posted Fri, 07 January 2005 at 8:42 AM

Unimesh basically means that the same base mesh is used for all the different figures, it's just modified slgithly to get a different look.

unimesh is a concept DAZ came up with .. they made one base figure mesh and they change it into different figures. This means that if you look at it in wireframe view you can see that though the figures are shaped differently the actual geometry is the same.. i.e. same number of vertices and so on. Becasue of this the uvmapping is more or less identical. This means that theres a greater amount of crossover possible between figures that use the same geometry. The uvmapping is more or less the same across all the Unimesh figures, so you can use most any Unimesh skin on any other unimesh figure. One exception: though the textures for Aiko3 are the same, Aiko3 has different material zones on her legs, and you will need to apply the texture manually to her legs. Same if applying A3 maps to another unimesh figure However, the male and female figures are cut and jointed differently to allow for movement. (Cause men dont have to worry about breasts for one thing ...) Because of this different cutting for male and female figures you cannot transfer morphs targets between differently grouped figures and there are more complications to converting clothing. Or in other words ... all unimesh figures use the same skin and eyeballs all unimesh females can share morph targets all unimesh males can share morph targets all unimesh females can share clothes (with morphing and scaling) unimesh females can wear male clothing from the waist down with some scaling all unimesh males can share clothes, with some scaling and morphing unimesh males can wear female clothing from the waist down (though I cant imagine why) all conforming hair for any figure can be converted to another figure (see Netherworks excellent conversion kits) hope that helped clear it up a bit pdxjim - feel free to correct me if I got somehting wrong :)

Unimesh is the technical term Daz uses for the object files for all the M3/V3 class of figures. The object files are identical in vertex count and order (basicly the same object, but pushed and pulled into different shapes. One mesh for all figures of this type. M3, V3, The Freak, The She-Freak, Ingenue Vicky, Stephanie Petite, David, Dodger's Aeon figures (at PoserPro's), Luke and Laura (Young teens) are all Unimesh figures. Grouping is how the body parts are divided on a figure. Unimesh type figures are divided into two basic types based on the kind of grouping they have. M3 and the Freak have one type of grouping, while the rest have another. Figures that are grouped alike can use the same morphs (with a little work). So V3 morphs can be transfered to SP3 or David, but not to M3 or the Freak (unless you have a morph converter - MMogul has a good one for sale here, and I'm working on one now with more options and channel transfer). It can be a bit confusing. THe general rule is that they all take the same textures, they all need different clothing, and depending on how they're grouped, can share morphs. Side note to Dr. Geep: Have you got a tutorial on the Unimesh? It'd be really useful for newbies, and no one does tuts better than you!

Cross post (grin). The only thing I'd disagree with is the clothing. It's pretty tough to get M3 clothing to fit the Freak with just sizing. For that matter, it's tough to make clothing for him. Those thighs are just too close for comfort. If you're fairly confident with UV mapping and .cr2 (character file) hacking, you can take one type of grouped figure and convert it to another type of grouped figure, add appropriate morph channels, and use morphs not designed for it. But this is really for the advanced user. The Unimesh is probably one of the best ideas Daz has come up with, and with every new character release, they improve how it's used. And I forgot to mention Aiko 3. She's Unimesh too. BTW, Uni = one, mesh = object or structure. So unimesh means one structure for all figures.

thanks a lot Now I know everything I wanted to know

Hmm but David doesn't take M3's facemorphs "out of the box" though. Or vice versa. Eventhough they're both males.

David wasnt born as a man.....he is a post-op transexual ;) He was made from the Steph unimesh if I remember correctly. So her morphs should work with him (though I never tried)

David is part of the V3 grouping. It used to be that the men were one group, and the women were in another. It was originally believed that the different grouping was to facilitate posing, but actually it makes little or no difference. So, with David, the grouping between figures is no longer men vs women, it's just how the mesh was grouped. Part of a project I'm working on now is creating a new version of M3 and the Freak that are grouped like V3/David, and take all the David injections and V3 head injections. As I said before, with each new character released by someone, they get better. Those improvements need to be migrated back to earlier figures. David is a vast improvement over M3, and V3 SAE has options not in the original V3 figure. I want to improve the M3 and Freak figures to the David level (at least as much as I can). You can use V3 heads on David though with Morphmanager. V3 has more faces than anyone else.

They're twins. But Freak was raised by a primitive tribe of ritualistic bodybuilders who eat nothing but raw meat and drink nothing but imported beers. Michael was raised by their mother, a hairdresser by day and an exotic dancer by night.
