Your problem is probably caused by an over-sized download.rdf file in the Firefox profile. Try deleting this file and see if it helps. You won't lose anything by deleting it other than your download history.

You should be able to prevent this from happening in the future by clearing the download history on a regular basis. If you let your download history grow too large, clearing it from within Firefox won't help, you have to delete the download.rdf file and start fresh. This bug has already been reported on bugzilla. Also, there is a documented memory leak within Firefox, not associated with the download history problem. Over time, the memory used by Firefox can become huge. Minimizing, then maximizing Firefox will free up memory.
