Subject: Renderosity has changed since I was first here

bukaroobonzai ( ) posted Fri, 28 January 2005 at 10:47 PM · edited Sat, 23 November 2024 at 1:31 PM

Renderosity has changed. It used to be a place to check out ART. now i come here and there is nothing but poser prefabs with big breasts. Im dissapointed. This place has been overrun by 14yr olds looking for porn.

odeathoflife ( ) posted Sat, 29 January 2005 at 12:50 AM

I have been here for like 4 years and that is all it had ever been, I have stopped placing and looking at the gallery ( here and everywhere) quite some time ago.

wizardtim ( ) posted Sat, 29 January 2005 at 10:23 AM

I've been here a little over a year, and found that the mods only want "nice" comments, don't try to post anything close to criticism of an image, even if it's ridiculous. They are also very uneven in their enforcement of this. So, I will no longer post images, buy anything from MP, or do anything to make this a more intersting place. They want shallow and superficial, they got it.

bukaroobonzai ( ) posted Sat, 29 January 2005 at 10:32 AM

yea... see i didnt realize it until i checked out the most viewed. most of lw is architecture and realism. but i was jusy in shock and wondered if anyone else noticed it. anyways...

dialyn ( ) posted Sat, 29 January 2005 at 10:33 AM · edited Sat, 29 January 2005 at 10:35 AM

That's not really what the rule is. Constructive criticism of the graphic is fine; but calling the creator of the graphic "an idiot" or "stupid" or otherwise namecalling is not. Unfortunately some people posting complain if they don't get all favorable remarks, so don't blame this problem completely on the administration. People like to be praised. I guess that's human nature. Very few people here are skilled at offering useful criticize what someone else is doing ("that sucks" is not useful cirticism), so often times the critiques come off as mean-spirited and argumentative rather than helpful. And, frankly, very few people here are trustworthy judges of what is or is not art (I can tell you what I like, but who cares...who am I to make that decision for anyhone but myself?)

You get on this site what you put into it. If you look for top heavy nudes, that's what you'll find. But there are wonderful abstracts, landscapes, portraits, models, etc. that are the product of people with talent. Poser, like anything else, is only as good as the person using it. In the hands of a hack, Poser produces the obvious and easy results; in the hands of a hobbyist (like me), it serves to give me an illusion of being able to do art without much effort or training; in the hands of an artist, Poser can be a powerfully creative tool. It's not possible for the administrators to develop talent or good taste in other people. That you have to blame on the audience.

And let's face it, it's the nudes that get the most views, no matter how clumsy or silly some of them are.

Hi Tim,
I am sorry you feel this way.

As to gallery comments - As long as the comment is posted with respect - Rosity encourages "Constructive Criticism"
However - there is a huge difference between leaving helpful comments and disrespectful comments.

Examples
"Constructive Criticism" Example: Try using a different lighting effect on your image, which would result in a less plactic-like skin texture appearance on your Poser figures.

"Non-Constructive Criticism" Example: Your Poser figure looks plastic and the lighting sucks!

As a rule of thumb - if your gallery comments are respectful to the artist and their artwork [they do not need to be glowing, but they do need to be respectful] there is never a problem leaving them :)

I understand the rules, but you cannot make blanket statements and be accurate. I know from experience that the mods are unfair, and can backup what I said. I've been on both side of crticism, and have always tried to offer constructive comments and NEVER name call. I have posted images in what used to be the political gallery and been told that I suck, that I'm racist, that I am not an artist, and all by people who don't know me. On the other side, I have been scolded by the mods for making a comment that was not vicious, was constructive, but still got me in trouble. The mods are unfair in my view, so unless you know my story, you cannot defend them.

wizardtim ( ) posted Sat, 29 January 2005 at 10:50 AM · edited Sat, 29 January 2005 at 10:52 AM

And another thought. I an new to the art world, as my background is in music and live theatre. When I first joined here, I shared some of my music in the Freebies section, and offered some for sale in the MP. I tried to participate in constructive ways. Then I made the mistake of posting in the World Events/Political section, where some of the more vicious types hang out. Because of my traditional views, I was called names and received very nasty IMs and emails. I had several images pulled because one of the mods didn't understand the concept of parody. Yet, many images, which were much more insulting but of a different viewpoint, remained. That's unfair. But. it's not my site, so if the PTB want an unevenly applied set of rules, so be it. It does not speak well for the art community.

Do not get me wrong. I think poser is an absolutely awesome tool. Before I was able to learn organics i used poser models to learn bones and animation. My point is I saw many pics that were nothing but prefab. And I do stand by the ideal that everyone is entitled to see art as whatever they want. No matter how much I may disagree. To each their own right?

ScottA ( ) posted Sun, 30 January 2005 at 3:19 PM

I can't say that the Galleries have changed since the start. But I do agree that the Poser forum has changed. I don't see as much of the model and figure creators posting new stuff in the Poser forum anymore. At least not like we used to do a few years ago. I'm just as guilty of that as anyone. I'm just way too busy working these days. But I'm sure most of that is because people are now selling the once freebies in the Marketplace. That's the biggest change I've seen. -ScottA

I reckon one can only call somebody a "weenie" on week-ends, as the mice will play when the cat's away.

But I too believe this site has changed since I first visited. at the time, it was called "poserforum", and willow was in charge. She waged an herculean struggle to keep the large-breasted soft-core porno off the site, but it was like herding a barrel of fleas. of course, in those days we didn't have all these magnificent models with giant breast morphs to choose from, but even then it was definitely a case of cherchez la femme.

Poserkatz ( ) posted Mon, 31 January 2005 at 2:17 PM

I have to agree with "wizardtim" - i deleted all my pics a while ago, and i never will post pics again here. My experience is similar to that, what "wizardtim" says. Like he, i deceided: this "community" will get, what they obviously want, that's not my problem.

bukaroobonzai ( ) posted Mon, 31 January 2005 at 2:38 PM

Poserkatz & wizardtim nicely put. I agree fully

Tedz ( ) posted Mon, 31 January 2005 at 3:00 PM

Well...at least the Forum Facility is being used, even though You choose to Delete Your Gallery and not contribute to the Community...that is a matter of choice. I, however believe that the "Mods"...are not Gods...but ..."volunteers"...who come from all walks of Life, and in the whole do a great "voluntary" Job....for the Community...though no one is perfect. As for Renderosity changing....the World changes and the People with it. So...if You are disappointed....this Thread may entice You to better the situation, by ...doing something "Positive" about it....Deleting Galleries is "Negative"...it is a Protest that no one notices :]

geoegress ( ) posted Mon, 31 January 2005 at 4:58 PM

"voluntary"? Not quite. There is a small payment each month.

wizardtim ( ) posted Mon, 31 January 2005 at 5:09 PM

Tedz, it's obvious you've not been on the receiving end of the mods. And I will take your comment about deleting galleries as the insult it was intended to be.

Tedz ( ) posted Mon, 31 January 2005 at 5:20 PM

Not an Insult...but...take it whichever way You like...I just see Deleting One's Gallery...anti Productive...and Negative...if by Me mentioning that....it is deemed as an Insult....then it seems You would only like Your own point of View....to infer that I insulted You...is an Insult :]

wizardtim ( ) posted Mon, 31 January 2005 at 5:28 PM

whatever.

XENOPHONZ ( ) posted Mon, 31 January 2005 at 6:14 PM

Wizardtim --

Personally, I agree with your politics. I, too, am very right-of-center on the political spectrum.

For what it's worth, in my experience.....if you are going to express an opinion (particularly on controversial subjects), then you had better be prepared for the firestorm that's sure to follow. To deal with this effect, one needs to have a hide like a rhinoceros. One can't afford to take the things that are inevitably going to be said to you personally. If you do, then the fight will drive you crazy. It can leave you both disillusioned and embittered.

If you have solid convictions, then you know in yourself that you are right. In more ways than one. You don't need to have your beliefs validated by undiluted public approval.

And, believe me, the left will never approve. If that is the goal, then you'll always come up disappointed.

You've got to obtain your validation from other sources. Like by knowing that you are telling the truth.

Why do you think that you make them so angry?

As for the staff here at Renderosity -- I believe that I understand what they are attempting to do.

If you can, try to identify with them for a moment.

They daily face the enormous task of trying to keep the lid on the pressure cooker. The staff deal with many different types of people, with many different ideas about the way that things should be run around here. There is the constant tension of potential conflict underlying the forums. There is the shouting of the unhappy. There are threats of "I'm leaving here forever because of _________(fill in the blank)!" on a semi-regular basis.

Meanwhile, the site continues on. And it is still the most popular Poser-related site on the internet -- by a wide margin.

How can the staff babysit all of us -- with all of our myriad.......not to mention conflicting........gripes?

One person doesn't like nudes. Nudes should be forbidden on the site.

Meanwhile, another individual yells about wanting unlimited "freedom of speech" - i.e. -- that they should be allowed to post anything in the galleries, no matter what it is. No restrictions at all.

Tell me, how does one control such a mob?

It's simple, right? Easy as pie. (Hint: it's not.)

All in all, I think that the staff here at RR has done their job about as well as anyone could. And I think that they deserve far more credit than they typically get.

As for a certain Mod doing something wrong: that's entirely possible. Mods are human.

Give it over. It's not worth the trouble.

My advice: relax and enjoy the site for the fun that it can be, and for the fun that it is.

Take the parts that appeal to you personally, and ignore the rest.

I rarely take everything that's offered on a buffet. Some of the items that are presented don't taste very good to me.

But that doesn't stop me from taking the things that I do like.

wizardtim ( ) posted Mon, 31 January 2005 at 6:31 PM

XENOPHONZ, thanks for your reply. I appreciate your explanation, but as someone who has tried very hard to be a productive part of this community, and then treated as if I am a child, I think I'm done here. Management has made no attempt to respond to my questions, other than the mod who stands by her actions. I've spent money here, but no more. I have posted the best of what I have created, but no more. I am new to art, and found that many of the folks here are very friendly and nice, but a few are jerks (that will get me in trouble again, oh well). Mods here don't want real comments, they want fluff. And they don't enforce the fluff rules evenly. I suspect the only reaction I will get will having this thread locked and/or my getting kicked out. If I sound bitter, I AM.

XENOPHONZ ( ) posted Mon, 31 January 2005 at 6:51 PM

Wizardtim --

It's your choice, friend.

Please remember: many things are choices. You don't have to be bitter.

many of the folks here are very friendly and nice, but a few are jerks

Many are "jerks".

Unfortunately, whenever you've got a crowd this size gathered together in one place -- that's inevitable. It can't be helped.

If you perform live music in front of a crowd, then you'll experience "jerks" up close and personal from time to time.

A gallery/forum post is the equivalent of live music -- of a performance -- some people will applaud, and some people will hurl insults at you.

That's life.

As for the Mod in question, I don't know who it is (and I don't need to know -- it doesn't matter) -- in her own way of thinking: she's right. It might be unfair. It might be wrong. It might absolutely unjustified -- I wasn't involved, so I don't know. BTW -- the particulars aren't any of my business, anyway.

But you'll never succeed in changing her mind.

My question would be: "So what?"

Really.......to quote Emerson.......it'll be all one 100 years hence.

I wouldn't let someone else's attitude to ruin mine. If you allow that, then they've won.

I've got a drive ahead of me.

Once again: it's your choice, man. Make it a good one.
