If you're on cable modem you should have something like zonealarm on your system. It's free and an invaluable tool. I go into it the first time poser tries to go out and disable the ability to go to the web. Problem solved. All it is doing when it is accessing is trying to make sure you aren't running more than one copy at a time on multiple computers. It doesn't know the difference between the web and your lan, it's just looking for another instance. I am a paranoid old woman and I updated, and I'm glad I did, solved a lot of problems.
