Windows is a big bug, it's known. We wnter here in a realm beyond logic. What works here, will not work there, even on a same hard-soft configuration. I still use winsu** because many good, even free programs run on it (and will never run on a mac). But, if you have some hd space free, why not use linux for web? Something like Knoppix relaease, if you want to try. It's the best choice for net surfing. It's easy and safer. The only problem is that you can't run both operatve systems togather. So, if you're doing a render in Bryce, you can't switch to linux and read your e-mails. But consider to buy an old laptop on ebay, like erosiaart says. For 40 - 50 bucks you could have a second laptop for web connections only. The day someone fuc** your firewall, you'll not loose your inportant data and softs, because they're on the other lappy. Keep well and good luck!
you can, however (read the notes carefully from whatever web site) make a multiple-boot partition with linux. You can't run them together, but can run them seperately. But those Service Pack updates..sheesh, I guess I'm lucky, because all they do is lock up my network connection. Also, I do believe that Microsoft will (for a 'nominal' fee) provide you with CD copies of this stuff, if you ask.

Aye, I'm running XP Pro Jessica Alba Edition, with no service pack updates, and rely on my hardware Dragonwall (Netgear Routers kick ass). There are reasons to need SP2, such as SATA support and stuff like that, so I understand your plight... I would reinstall XP one more time, and stay away from the SP's for a time, make sure everthing is running just fine and then get SP1, make sure everything is running fine and set a System restore point, which never actually works but it's a cool thing to do, if you're bored. Then perhaps try it all again?!? I wish you well, and good luck. And don't ever buy a Mac, Drac. Ever.
I once installed SP2 it totally locked my computer almost brought my machine to Ruin.
I had to safe mode which took many tries and uninstall Sp2 To make my comp work at all. It simply will not work With SP2 I dont know why. I could take 100 hours and figure out why (I'm slow but persistant).
But instead I'm living just fine without it:)

My sister came to me to help clean up her computer cause it ran so slow and was constantly crowded with popups. So I went through the routine and we couldn't get rid of a half assed install of McAfee. So I suggested she take it to a repair place and have the drive wiped and re-install XP. She did take it to have the software repaired, and they found 2,034 viruses, 63 trojans, and assorted spy and adware. She said to get rid of McAfee they used something called, 'Force' ? Anyone know what this is And anyone know of a good app for finding trojans? I was never sure whether virus scanners find trojans or not....I have ZoneAlarm....

WinXP SP2 is full of security holes, more than it fixes... Try using: Spybot Search and Destroy Avast (Personal Edition) Adaware Oh...and Firefox lets less junk through the IE. ;) Nevanna
Spysweeper works fairly well and you can get a 2 week free trial($29.95 subscription after that), it's made by Webroot. Or Pest Patrol seems decent also. Those are the two that I have used. Spybot and Adaware didn't find squat as far as I could see.

I, like, ardiva have never had update issues (knock knock) unless my system was infected. never use sysrestore though i have lost tons of data pics music from my habits. I use Mc cost-to-dern-much-ee and ad-ware 6.0 plus a couple of other protective progs but all I can say is one step at a time seems to work best (but it takes for freaking ever loading everything back on)
"She said to get rid of McAfee they used something called, 'Force' ? Anyone know what this is" Ctrl+Alt+Del -> End every McAfee task. Go to Program Files directory, delete McAfee directory. Go to Registry Editor, delete every mention of McAfee. Spybot Search & Destroy with Teatimer turned on. Or Ad-Aware Pro with AdWatch turned on. Hijack This! for occasional scanning. I have SP2, Bitdefender Pro antivirus, Ad-Aware, Zone Alarm. And Opera. Must not forget Opera. :-)

Okay, so this is the story. 1. Went to Windows update 'cause I read somewhere that Microsoft released some new bug fixes. Download them, when it comes to install, error for all. 2. Go on IRC to #winxp on EFnet, ask what to do, they tell me to uninstall the last update. Go to Add-Remove, do so, restart the computer. Error, mslogon.dll or something similar not found. I don't have a password for the comp or anything, but still, major dll problem. Crap. Re-install Windows. 3. Go to Windows Update again, go up to SP2 update-wise. Download SP2, install, no problems, until I try to get back online (SP2 installs the firewall with it). Net not working, I have cable. WTF. Disable the stupid Microcrap firewall, still nada. I enable it back, enable all possible proggies with it, then disable it, still nothing. Basically IE and Firefox come out blank. Not even about:blank, no url. Disable the connection, turn off the firewall, enable the connection, still nothing. It worked with SP2 just fine before, but the question is what I'm going to do now, since I NEED SP2 plus the other critical updates. If I install SP2 again, it's going to be the same. I can't download 80mb on dialup. I could dl SP2 on cable somehow independently, then install it with dialup on, try to figure out the connection that way, and hope it works no cable. Ideas? Will give sexual favors and/or free models to whoever figures this out. Kthx. Drac
