Wings is easier to pick up, and does most modeling tasks well. Blender does everything, but the interface takes some getting used to. It's got a steep learning curve. I've also tried several modeling programs, but Wings was the easiest for me to learn. (Have to agree about Truespace..but then I couldn't figure out which direction it was going in the first place..;)
Since Wings and Blender (and Anim8tor) are free, download each, and give 'em a shot. There's no telling which one you'll like best..
