[more info at the link] I think Hugo Weaving did just fine as Elrond. After all, he was thousands of years old, had lost his brother (who chose to become mortal and was the first King of Men), had lost his wife (wounded by orcs and departed to the West), and was watching as everything he had tried to preserve, including all that lore, was withering away.
