I came accross this ship in the Vue 5 object library an to me it looks pretty much medieval, but I'm not sure at all. It for sure doesn't look like a Frankish, English or French ship, but more like a Spanish/Portugese or Italian ship. In the library it's just called vessel, no further info at all.

Does somebody recognize the vessel and can you perhaps give me some more info on it? Mainly looking for vessel type, nation and time period (roughly).

I do mean between 800AD and 1200AD, not 800 to 1200 ships :-)

I suspect that this is not based on a real vessel, but I agree that it has a sort of Southern Europe looke to it. It may be outside of your specified time-span, but have a look at "Sea Traveller" by Kaol in the marketplace here. It is an outstanding piece of work, very highly detailed.

It looks like Red sea Doeh, Egyptian, NorthAfrican, By the Rigging after about 1180's throu to 1880's. Check out Marine Museum(s) websites , Portsmouth.UK, Denmark, Halifax.Canada OR Osprey Books have a naval series... R

I think the time span you are refering to is in Europe more the time of vicings and more costal related ships. Not the time of the big ones as the ones i remember from the marketplace. The one that comes with Vue to me looks as well very South European and much later. Even later as the 15th century. Remember, 1492 Columbus discovered America with three boats you should look at. They where incredible small (in our standards) and looked not so modern as the Vue CD one. I am sure Kenwas can say something to this thread, he is doing a lot of naval scenes, mostly historical ones. He seems to be interested in that subject. Maybe you try and ask him directly?

This one seems to be carvel built, which makes it 15th-16th century. Earlier ships were clinker built. DAZ has a very decent drakkar, might be useful for your project.
