Not only that, but most everybody in my Smallville fan groups agree it's the main reason for Canon!Lex dumping Canon!Clark -- when your supposed best friend won't even trust you enough to explain he's got a secret and he's afraid he'll endanger you by telling the truth, well that sez it all about the relationship, now don't it? Of course we all know that never happened to fanon!Lex & Clark. Especially those of us living in CLex-land. ;-)
