I see this among people of a certain age (i.e., painfully young), who haven't learned to differentiate betwee 'good' and 'bad' attention, you can beat them up at your lesiure, but as long as you're hitting them, they've made a connection. The Irony is, Bin Laden would cap him with as much glee as anyone else (yes, you cannot say certain things about the President, and the 1st amendment does not apply...well in this country, anyway..)
