Poser 5 does let you do a lot more with the look of a surface, especially displacement maps. That's how the detail on the walls is added.
But don't rule out using one of the free 3D modelling programs such as Anim8or or Wings. They're pretty small programs.
UVmapper Classic is available for free. Just setting up a model with a UV map makes a huge difference to how even a seamless texture renders. In-Poser techniques use tools such as the magnet deformer, and the initial UV map gets distorted.
The demo version of UVmapper Pro, even as limited as it is, can make a big difference when you're editing the actual texture, giving you a quick look at the texture on the model.
