this one: appeture: f/5 exposure time: 5 sec. ISO: 100 this is the original. i plan to continue my nightshot experiments, trying different settings. would like advice/feedback please. i know compo sucks! i was totally freezing my ass off. I wasn't focusing (my mind) very well). I thought we were outside just 5 minutes. turns out it was almost an hour. i have no concept of time when i'm shooting.

I did some photoshop work to the top one and if you would like to see I can post it.

OK...I did some colour adjustments, then shadow and highlight tuing. Not sure you will like, but having it comopressed so low it is hard. Be easier to play with a TIFF or RAW

Same as this..if the orange bugs you then you kind of have to mess with them.

yeah, i really do like it a lot, Doug!!! it's great!!

i'm just in one of those moods where i'm more into intense colors. in a few days, i may prefer yours with the less intense colors though. thanks for playin' around with it!!! i think i like yours better than the b/w.

here's another one i did. i like it a lot too.

Well you got the snow down better than me on this. Good.I prefer it this way myself. But there is times for intense. It can also look good in sepia.I really like the shot though.Has that comfy street feel.Except driving on those worn out roads...(keeps speeders down)it looks great.

we crossed, doug. i'm just in an intense color mood. i prefer my #3 to your #9. I don't mind the orange in that one. in #9, something feels not right about the colors. like they're a bit muddy. dunno. maybe it's just me. look at your #9. What's that above the tree? i'm not seeing it my #3. i'm just confused why my images are coming out orange. does that have to do the with shutter speed? thanks!!! i like to see other versions!!!

tvernuccio ( ) posted Mon, 14 March 2005 at 2:16 AM

crossed again...thanks, doug. yeah, might look good in sepia too. hadn't tried that yet. In #10, i like how the "moon" (if that's what that light is) looks. i think it looks better in that one.

DJB ( ) posted Mon, 14 March 2005 at 2:26 AM

Well it is fun playing with them anyway...gives me practice.

i should be in bed. it's almost 4 a.m. finally getting sleepy.
i'll get a few hours sleep tonight. sigh edit: this one needs a lot of work. still like it though.

excellent night shots!!! i think you've been pulling my leg and knew how to shoot these all along..heh heh!!! all my night shots get that orange cast as well but i prefer b/w so i never bothered to try and fix them. i'll have to hit DB up for some knowledge...lol!!! love the pic with the trails in it but also the last image, love the purpleish tone to it, really conveys the cold!!! oh and can't forget the pic with the star like light, that's very cool!!! nicely done on all accounts! great things to come for sure!!! eb

Great shots there Sheila! (Love them NIGHT MOVES!) The ORANGE coloring is most likely due to the White balance mode being used. You may have it set to AUTO White Balance (AWB) and when there is ALOT of different light sources, it sometimes confuses the camera (AWB). You may need to change from AUTO to TUNGSTEN or fluorescent mode. Try experimenting with different settings and refer to your manual too. Again if you shoot in RAWwhite balance can be changed with software/postwork. Joe

Thanks so much guys!!!!! Yep, sure did have a lot of fun, Pat, although kemal and I were practically numb by the time we came inside! Eric, haha yeah right! wanna see my what my nightshots looked like before you helped me....well, this is one of my first attempts...i think taken 2 yrs ago?? Huge difference!!!!!! You can see i was NOT pulling your leg and desperately needed some help!!!!! What a difference some good advice makes!!!!!! :) Thanks!!!!!!!

tvernuccio ( ) posted Mon, 14 March 2005 at 9:03 AM

we crossed, Joe. Thanks for that advice about white balance. I was in manual mode when i shot these, but i'm sure it was set in auto white balance. I'll have to check my manual these days. i'd rather not have to shoot in raw because of those file sizes. that drives me crazy! i'll what i can do. Thanks for the advice, Joe!!!!

Youb are flying wee One....am still experimenting Myself...way to go :]

Onslow ( ) posted Mon, 14 March 2005 at 11:46 AM

These look fabulous to me Shiela, as Joe said white balance is reason for the orange tint. (I have not tried night photography - have enough problems when its sunny) How did you arrive at your exposure time for these?

i like the orange tint mixed with the black and white...it really adds depth to it i think!

I love the first one!! Orange light or not, it's definitely my fav! Actually, I think the orange tone adds such a wonderful touch!! I also love the B&W version of it!! U're doing amazingly well Sheila!! Keep them coming! :)

Experimenting is good Shelia, it is part of the learning process, and you seem to be a quick study at this! Can't wait to see more! Brenda :)

Shee, niiiiiiiiiiice. I'm a bit late to add comments without repeating other people ;-) Bit bloody nippy out though, eh, what? (",)

tvernuccio ( ) posted Tue, 15 March 2005 at 8:07 AM

Thanks so much guys for all your feedback!!!!!! Richard, you asked how i arrived at my exposure time. Well, I've been bugging Eric (eb) a lot!!! LOL! i begged him to tell me his secrets, and he gave me very detailed information on what settings he uses (a general guide--not set in stone). Then, once i had the basic idea, i just experimented like i always do. I tried going in the opposite direction with the exposure time, and the result turned out pretty crappy. ISO is critical. even at 200, there was too much noise. anyway, i played around with exposure time between 3-5 sec. Five seconds seemed to be perfect. what do you think? i decided to see what happened when i drastically changed the exposure time. the image was really dark. not bad, just not much detail and pretty dark too. it wasn't what i wanted.
