Well, on a digi that has an extending lens, you screw a metal tube on so the filter can be screwed on - in front of the lens then, obviously.
In the pic, from top to bottom : Polarizing filter; Adapter ring to accept 49mm filters ; tube.

btw, if your gonna use a ring, wherever possible I'd advise to use the right size filters on it INSTEAD of an adapter ring to make smaller ones fit.... using them like mine, above, sometimes ends up with vignetting, and when taking a photo you have to visually crop smaller to allow for this on the final image.
