Operaguy, Frodo spent all that time sucummbing to the evil of the ring, combined with a kinship feeling with only other being around that had succumbed to the rings power (Bilbo doesn't count, he's not there) He wants to believe Gollum can be saved, because it means he can be saved. it does happen in the book (read last summer, for the 4thtime I think from a 1972 box set with Tolkien art on the covers) And Frodo does send Sam away because of Gollums word. But jackson should have had the raising of the shire included. At least I think so.

Elijah Wood is truly creepy in the role of Kevin in the movie "Sin City"! He plays a preternatural cannibal psycotic mute. Sin City is a great movie. I hear the producers used Poser 6 to make some parts, just to piss off Birddie!

Frodo didn't order Sam to go home in the book!!! :sheesh: He ran ahead of Sam, being abstracted for a moment by a clear path. If he'd bothered to think, he would have realized that Sam wasn't as close as he thought (remember that Sam was "the fat hobbit" and not as quick on his toes). Sam wasn't that far behind when Shelob pops out of a crack between them. Gollum's "slinker and stinker" characters in the movie was pretty accurate. Sam was very good. Eowyn was right. Boromir was an improvement. Almost everyone else suffered character assassination to various degrees. I still love the movies, but they will not replace the books in my heart. I see that Little Dragon also knows who got the last bottle of bleach in Middle Earth and what he had to do to get it! ;^) Carolly

CALIFORNIA ANGELS FOREVER. I wish they'd just stuck with that! The Rangers did not change their name to the Irving Rangers or the Fort Worth Rangers or whatever. Although Anaheim Angels was okay. I read the Trilogy to my son aloud and it's a bond we share for life. My grandmother read me the entire Anne of Green Gables series (something like seven books in all), and a few other classics (like Little Women). Those memories are among my most treasured. bonni

a friend gave me the set of Tolkien paperbacks for my birthday... 1962, IIRC. A life-changing gift. There is no way to determine how many times I have read them. I've also read Silmarillion and Unfinished Tales at least once through and many times dipping. Just starting on the 12 volume series Book of lost Tales. :happy sigh: If you are familiar with any of the sagas and mythologies from northern Europe you kep encounters resonant bits which just add to the richness. Operaguy... were you at the premier of Shore's symphonic assemblage, down at the Hollywood Bowl last summer? Gavin got tickets for us and I took the Amtrak down. Wonderful music, but I hated the way it was put together, with the 4 huge video screens being a major distraction. I'm calling it an "assemblage", because it isn't a symphony yet, merely his favorite bits from the soundtrack and too closely tied to the story. The music can stand on its own, once he finds the courage to admit it and the time to do a proper job of arranging and bridging the elements. Carolly

You will probably be shocked, but I am not a huge fan of the Shore music for Lord of the Rings. The problem is that this is musical material strectched out into parts of, what, 9 hours? Now, it may be just as you pointed out...he has not crystalized it into a symphonic work yet/ever. If he did find the courage (that was the right word) he would write a Suite or Symphony sourced from the soundtrack material, but one that would be centered in its own power. That might be another story. I've been reading since 1966 myself. I remember the anticipation in 1977 for the publication of the Silmarillion. I obtained my copy on the publication date, read it in one weekend, and was so shocked and marred and disturbed and awed that I could not discuss the book nor read it again for two years. ::::: Opera :::::

Ahhh my beloved Cincinnati Reds won their first game!!! No matter how good or bad they do I still love 'em...they are my boys of summer! I could have taken his POV, but the stale jokes about dwarf-tossing and "game over" with the added drinking contest and his cheating did NOT endear me to him at all. Yes Carolly, most people watching the movie have no idea how deep this issue is, not even back to the Thorin jailing, although I am certain you do. It goes back six thousand years, to the moment when the dwarves finished the reworking of the Nauglamir (a necklace) by placing the Silmaril radiant in its center, and then refused to return it to the Elven King Thingol. The Dwarves killed Thingol. There was a huge war between dwarves and elves. Even deeper: Elves are the firstborn of Iluvatar (God) but dwarves were made by Aule, one of Iluvatar's important 'angels.' There's a jealousy in it. But also triumph, because Iluvatar blessed the act, unlike the un-blessed attempt of Melkor (fallen angel) to create a race -- the orcs. IMO, Tolkien intended the Gimli/Legolas relationship to be a chapter in the healing of the entire history of conflict between elves and dwarves. To sully this tragic but noble history with Jackson's smarmy 20th century silliness...it's like making a sitcom out of Macbeth. ::::: Opera :::::

I believe there is an iron curtain version of Macbeth, and even a Simpson's take on the tragedy: "is this a doughnut I see before me?" The friction with the dwarves started even before that problem with the necklace... why didn't Thingol listen to his wife? She was a Maia, after all, wise as well as powerful. :sigh: In many ways the elves and dwarves are similar: both being jewelers and weaponmakers, both enhancing their works with magic... and both races being secretive and proud. It is interesting that the major work utilizing the skills of both people is the massive door between their realms. I think there was also a lot of simple gut-level competition. It would be easier for elves to get along with men to whom they could feel superior than with someone who was created first (thus usurping their title) and who excelled at the same activities. One wonders, here deep in the Fourth Age, if the Elves begin to rethink their appraisal of Men. On the one hand, confirming their superiority, they must see us as having dwindled in stature.
