If you go into "Render Options" tab, you can you can select to render to a new viewport (I'd tell you exactly, but I'm rendering right now, lol), and you can select the output image size from there. As for your lighting questions, I've found that the best thing to do is experiment. When you add a point light, and the screen goes dark, that is because you need to move the light into position. You'll notice that your point light, when you add it, becomes your default figure in your Parameter Dials, and you can move it anywhere along the x, y, or z axes to move the light into place.
