Volume quality places a big part in that stuff, I totally see what you mean. Sometimes you can't get rid of the artifacts realistically, anyways. This flower used a light dome to make the soft shadows, and one volumetric spotlight set to 30 even, and I still got some silly shadows... Took forever to render to, those tough little volumetric-demons are ruthless... (oh yeah, in number Nine, I like the one on the bottom right myself...)
