Technically, you're not doing anything wrong. Poser has simply been very unforgiving with its smooth-shading algorithms, at least until recently. The traditional methods of creating hard edges in Poser involve splitting the vertices along those edges, or adding a tiny bevel. Poser 6 has a new crease-angle feature that will usually correct the problem automatically, but that option isn't available in earlier versions.
