Just do a Google search on the terms amityville house hoax and read for yourself. It's almost certain that it was a hoax, designed to sell books and gain notoriety. In fact, there had been a rather grisly murder scene in the hosue some time before (several members of the same family), and that might have given the owners who concocted the haunting story the idea, but in any event, there's very good evidence that the haunting was a hoax and just about no evidence of any paranormal activity (well, there are people who study that sort of thing).
