The various Internet companies, between your ISP and any particular site, have non-obvious standards for the "shortest route", including not wanting to pay anyone else to carry traffic around a problem. And if your ISP connects to the world through Company A, while the destination site uses Company B, Chicago might be where A connects to B. Even if B is on the opposite site of your street.
