Carrara uses a little different scheme for that. Instead, you change the Lighting Model in the texture room. The object will now only show up when a shadow is cast on it and uses whatever colors and textures you designate in the shader. Usually, you simply color the object with a dark gray or black since that is what most shadows look like. But, for colored shadows you can use different colors. Kinda cool.
