Wow, great stuff from everyone! Beck, don't feel bad about using a terrain--your picture looks great. Are you using the default brick texture? I'm not sure if you can rotate it inside the function but you can edit the bmp file if you want to turn it. Also you could experiment with different mapping styles.--it defaults to automatic, but sometimes the faces or spherical might work better...
