Poser is happiest when separate pieces are treated as separate 'body parts'. (This is especially true of the Firefly renderer.) If you build the whole thing as a figure, you can Lock the parts that shouldn't move, or hide their parameters while leaving the names on the menu for convenience in assigning materials.
